Six strangers are playing a televised tabletop campaign for a million dollars.
This is the story of the world they are playing in.
Vahn the Unwritten came to Thistledown because a lone scholar gets turned back at every gate, and a bound party doing lawful work does not. She finds five other people with reasons of their own: a soldier who checks the exits without moving his eyes, a thief who steals your lunch and leaves you a better one, a surgeon with one hard question, a duelist who has only ever fought for applause, and a farm girl carrying something wrapped in oilcloth.
They put their hands on a stone table and swear one oath: to the end of the road, together. The road takes that seriously. Walk away early and it takes back everything you earned, down to your name on your own steel.
What starts as a wolf hunt becomes a raid. The raid becomes a mystery about forty-one signatures on a contract nobody honored. The road east ends in a courtroom beneath a free city, at a door that opens for no king and weighs exactly what six people are carrying.
There are no stat screens here. No system windows. Every rule is felt in the body and paid for on the page, because somewhere above it all, a man wrote those rules twenty years ago and eleven million people are watching the table.
