Billy Tate is a brilliant young scholar driven by a desperate mission to save his terminally ill mother. When conventional medicine fails, Billy turns to independent research, determined to uncover a cure. His quest leads him to the Rare Manuscripts division of the New York Public Library, where he discovers an enigmatic text written in an indecipherable language. Focused to the point of obsession, Billy commits himself to cracking the code, entirely unprepared for the consequences of his success.
His breakthrough transports him to EmberEarth, a world still recovering from a cataclysmic war fought a millennium ago between Wizards and DireMages—also known as Dark Mages or Bloodletters — a conflict that rent the fabric of reality and nearly destroyed civilization. Though Billy's sole priority is to return to his mother, he is involuntarily drawn into a brewing conflict that threatens to unleash those same destructive forces once more.
In a perilous landscape overrun by monstrous creatures, Billy gradually realizes that the fate of an entire world hangs in the balance. Ancient dragons awaken to the call of a young girl destined to lead them. Meanwhile, Bloodletters emerge from the shadows to operate openly. To make matters worse, a dark lord rises and begins summoning the dead to his command.
Accompanied by a group of newfound allies, Billy must navigate these escalating threats to prevent total devastation.
