I didn’t ask for no djinni in a bottle. Didn’t ask for no magic, neither. What I wanted was out from under a damn mountain, a truck that wouldn’t quit on me, and a quiet life after too many losses.

Instead, I got Jenny-with-a-D. I call that smart-mouthed, gorgeous, impossible pain in my ass DJ, and she’s bound to a brass lamp that had no business existing in a West Texas mining tunnel. Her take on wishes helped, what with the Range Rover, coffee machine, and the strange comfort of having that beautiful troublemaker who saw right through my crusty exterior in my kitchen offering tempting perks that I had no business accepting.

But every day I spent with her made the real problem harder to ignore. She wasn’t free, and the longer I held on to my third wish, the more I became like the assholes who bound her to that lamp. It’s this dumb, supernatural bureaucracy that locked down kin like her with audits, red tape, and enforcers—all of it bound by rules written by ancient powers who see folks like me as useful idiots and djinn like her as dangerous, restricted inventory.

Now I’m down to my last wish, and the only thing clearer than my feelings for that blue-skinned, smart-mouthed djinni is the cost of using it. If I choose DJ over fear and free her from the damn system that brought her to me… I might draw the attention of arcane forces that keep kin like her in chains and lose her forever.

I’ll be damned if I let that happen without a fight.
